This textbook published in 1988 is the last of the series before the collapse of the USSR; designed for weightlifting students of the Institutes of Physical Culture. There were at least two previous editions: 1972 & 1982. The text covers a wide range of topics for the prospective weightlifting coach: technique, learning technique; planning training; physiology of strength; injuries; recuperation and so forth. Each chapter was authored by different specialists who worked under Arkady Vorobeyev, MD, PhD, six time world and two time Olympic champion. Vorobeyev usually authored the sections on strength training, physiology and guys like L. N. Sokolov and I.P. Zhekov, the biomechanics, and so on.

Vorobeyev authored a number of books, all titled Tiiazhelaya Atletika ({Weightlifting); in 1964, 1971 and 1977. It is not easy for someone researching (like yours truly) the Soviet weightlifting literature to sort through the confusion created by a single title for numerous books.

For instance, in 1970 – 1972 a number of books entitled simply Tiiazhelaya Atletika were published in the USSR. All had different authors, including one by Vorobeyev (1971) plus the 1972 edition of this very textbook.

I have chosen to translate segments of the 1988 version which I felt are still pertinent; considering the information is 32 years old. A lot has changed in the interim: female weightlifters lifting more than some of the male weightlifting records of the 1950s; high speed cameras, computers and sophisticated tools for complex analysis of weightlifting biomechanics and so forth.

For today’s coaches and athletes unfamiliar with the history weightlifting sport science, invented by the USSR, accepted facts are based on a rational; a dialectic of interconnections. Some of these books, not – infrequently, quote from Frederick Engels The Dialectics of Nature, Lenin, or Karl Marx; even looking to unlikely sources for training strength athletes.

For instance, there a is lengthy section in Vorbeyev’s 1977 edition of Weightlifting about the training philosophy and methods of Doc Counsilman; the famous swimming coach of Indiana University who produced such champions as Mark Spitz. Counsilman if not the first, certainly is America’s greatest sport scientist.

That being said, some of the information, the concepts presented in this edition of Tiiazhelaya Atletika were not only way ahead of their time in 1988; but still way ahead in the year 2020. For most coaches and athletes active today, still employing old ideas; many of these concepts may still be out of reach.

“The leg extension outstrips the trunk extension during the preliminary acceleration.”

“The execution of the movement is correct when there is no full extension of the knees;

“A full and stable rise onto the toes certainly is a technical error, because one delays the “switching” to the squat under.

“When one observes higher barbell speeds in the thrust phase and significantly greater height of barbell trajectory for the jerk, it is indicative of lesser economy of movement and poorer technique.”

“… the majority of coaches recommend the athlete fully straighten knees and actively rise onto the toes during the thrust when learning the switch from thrusting to the split under the barbell.”
